American Fence Association – Certification School

As you know if you keep up with our blog, Southwest Fence & Deck is a proud member of the American and Texas Fence Associations. After serving as President of the Texas Fence Association last year, Jamie Turrentine is now serving on the Board of Directors for the American Fence Association in an effort to further the association’s mission by promoting the highest level of professionalism, ethics and product standards in the industry.

Last month, Jamie attended the Colorado Fence Association’s quarterly meeting along with AFA Executive VP, Rick Church, to discuss the benefits of the AFA and the value of the certification classes the AFA offers its members. As we have mentioned on this blog before, if you are new to the industry, the AFA has a very rich history and offers immense value to its members. Whether it is through networking with your peers, keeping up to speed on the latest available products or taking advantage of the certification and credibility membership has to offer, you will benefit considerably by joining AFA.

Did you know the AFA offers various certification programs to its members, such as Fence Installation School, Certified Installer Programs and Automated Gate Operator Installer Programs? Not only does AFA offer week-long classroom and field-based modules, the Association is committed to training teachers on a regional level so other chapters can provide the same modules to members on a local level. These programs are the highest professional certifications you can receive in the industry, and are a great way to elevate your company and team to a level well above the competition. You can view the different certifications and classes involved on the education portion of the AFA website. Classes and scholarship opportunities are also available to nonmembers.

If you have questions about membership or any of the certification classes, please feel free to reach out to Jamie at Southwest Fence & Deck. We are always excited to see new members at meetings!

Amateur Gardening Tips from Your Fence Guys!

Last weekend was spent almost entirely outside due to the unusually warm March temperatures (even for Texas)! These are the beautiful days that we all long for in the middle of August. Although we are still hoping to get some more soaking rains before summer fully sets in, we are very grateful for a jump start to this year’s busy season. And boy, have we been busy! Looks like we are not the only ones enjoying the outdoor living spaces early this year.

Many north Texas residents have already planted their gardens, gearing up for our traditional summer cookouts complete with fresh vegetables. Plus, growing your own vegetables and herbs can be a great way to eat healthy and save this season at the grocery. While we are not professionals in this particular area, we did want to provide some tips on vegetables we’ve had the most success with in our notorious Texas summers.

Tomatoes do well, but should be planted soon. They can handle the heat whether in a pot or in your garden with some cages. Peppers also produce here in Texas. Last year, the jalapeños we planted did not produce until the very end of summer, but when they did, there were hundreds. After picking those, another crop came in and we ended up giving them away by the dozens in addition to pickling several (whole and sliced). This is highly recommended if you love spicy peppers! Just be careful as to what other vegetables you are growing your peppers near. They can have an effect on the taste of other vegetables.

Squash, zucchini and cucumber are also recommended in addition to green beans and okra. Many herbs handle the heat including rosemary (which looks and smells wonderful), thyme, oregano and sage. After the last frost has passed, basil also thrives, which was another plant that we enjoyed in abundance last year. So much so, we made a few large batches of fresh pesto at the end of November. Yes, that is how long the plants were producing before our first freeze of the year.

If you are so inclined, compost — try making your own! — can also do wonders for your garden since the soil in north Texas is not always ideal.

What other plants do well in your garden, north Texans? We would love to hear and see some pics. Please feel free to share on our Facebook page.

Preparation For North Texas Heat

As the beginning of March approaches, we already notice our local trees budding to signal that spring is just around the corner. After such a mild winter in North Texas, it is natural to wonder if we will experience the same dry conditions we had in 2011, and it certainly looks as if we will. Recent rainfall has helped tremendously in increasing the water levels in our local reservoirs. Unfortunately, the rest of the state has not experienced the same, and even north Texas counties have not lifted the Stage 3 water restrictions, according to the North Texas Municipal Water District.

Due in part to the economic conditions as well as the drought and lack of water in local lakes, it is still common for Texans to use spring breaks and summer for “stay-cations.” Because of this, more and more homeowners are investing money into their own backyards. Partly to provide entertainment for the family and also as a long term investment to increase the value of their homes. Outdoor kitchens continue to be one of the top trends homeowners are adding to their backyards in addition to seating areas to create a true outdoor living space. We expect with the ongoing dry weather in north Texas, that low-maintenance landscaping will be a priority in the coming months as well. Native plants, which have proven ability to withstand the notorious Texas summers, will help you conserve water and brighten up your backyard.

Whatever you desire for your outdoor living space, Southwest Fence & Deck would appreciate the opportunity to work with you to make it happen. Summer will be here before you know it, so start planning now to ensure it will be ready to enjoy by the time the warm weather arrives! Contact us today or visit our website for photos and information about previous work we have completed in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

Southwest Fence & Deck Joins the American Fence Association in Miami to Support Ronald McDonald House

On January 24, 2012, The American Fence Association paid a visit to The Ronald McDonald House in Miami, Florida before their annual FENCETECH convention. Volunteers brought and served dinner from Olive Garden to the families and children currently staying at The Ronald McDonald House – Miami, followed by a friendly game of Bingo. Coordinators at the house expressed a need for baby items in particular, so volunteers made a trip to Target before the visit to gather needed donations such as baby diapers, baby food, detergent, etc. AFA members also spent time cleaning the courtyard of the house and repainting the fence surrounding it.

The Ronald McDonald House – Miami operates as a “Home Away From Home” for families and children with serious illnesses being treated at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Center and other nearby hospitals. The Ronald McDonald House provides a safe and loving home where people can relax during their time of need. At “The House That Love Built,” families can sleep comfortably, cook meals, do laundry, and receive understanding and support from others facing similar circumstances. The Ronald McDonald House – Miami was founded in 1982 and was the first House in South Florida.

The American Fence Association was originally founded in 1962 with the mission to promote the highest level of professionalism, ethics, and product standards by disseminating information and educating its members. AFA members and participants at The Ronald McDonald House event included: Lynn M. Erickson, David Culbreath, Molly Culbreath, Ramona Kruege, Jean Kruege, Randy Sorenson, Travis M. Hampton, LeAnn Turrentine, Jamie Turrentine, Deb Roche, Don Roche, Chris Loftus, Jon Stiles, Sid Isenberg, Ralph Allen, Tracey Allen, Taurean Paakaula, and Steve Hoopman.
